la Plaine

Discover a glance at the discoveries of our treasure hunt:

This area is better known by the inhabitant of Marseille under the name « la Plaine » (“the Plain”), although it must climb there! This name is derived from the old name of the area « Plan Saint-Michel » (in Provençal: Plan Sant-Miquèu), plan meaning plateau in Provençal.

In the 13th century, the « Plan Saint-Michel » was a field of Mars (military parade ground). It was a camp of the Crusaders, who embarked at Marseille destined for the Holy land. At the time it was a desert plateau far from the city which was only animated by days of military exercise or royal visits.
